Although adults also dip into Atlin Warm Springs in British Columbia, its very apparent that Mother Nature designed it especially for children; the pool is warm, not hot. It's only about 3' deep and just the right size for its patrons. It's in total wilderness and the outlet on either side is lined with a profuse growth of watercress. --RM

Up along the Bering Sea coast, the Chuckchi Sea and beyong, whale bones, from the grand bowhead whale have been put to many uses throughout the ages. One popular "use" is for fish drying and meat racks. What better place for a swing in a treeless tundra? Other uses for whale bone included posts for radio aerials, kyak and umiak racks and ancient grave markers. --RM

Description

A long time ago, Raven flew into the mouth of a whale & spent his days happily eating fish the whale caught. When he tired of the fish diet, Raven ate the whale's heart. The whale died and floated ashore. But Raven continued to eat the inside of the whale. He was happy & sang songs. Some men nearby heard the singing, and found the sound was coming from a beached whale. Delighted, they alerted the people of their village, who all came to butcher the lucky find. When no one was looking, Raven flew out of the whale's blow hole & called to the people, Did you hear singing coming from that whale? Every-one acknowledged that they had. Raven screeched loudly, Don't you know that when a dead whale sings, he is poisonous? Don't eat any of it. NONE OF IT! The frightened people ran, leaving their boxes of butchered meat behind. Now all the meat was Raven's again & he continued his feast.till all was gone.

Issue Year: 1999
Print #: F58

Description

There was a grand display on Tenakee's waterfront this summer when a pod of five or six Humpback whales made an appearance boiling the waters and feeding on some underwater delicacy. Eventually they glided across the inlet and then were gone. Later when the tide went out we discovered what they had been feasting on. Large areas of the beach had turned pink from millions upon millions of washed up krill a miniature shrimp less than an inch long & the width of a pencil line. --RM LAST AVAILABLE !!
