Description
Dinner preparations for the dog team start early in the morning. The fire has to be lit and tended for the better part of the day. Water in the oil drum has to come to a boil. Fish heads, tails, carcasses, have to cook and finally dinner has to cool down. Description
Steam baths, sweat baths, saunas, call them what you will, they come in all shapes and sizes and they are found all over Alaska. Last summer, in Aniak on the Kuskokwin River, I was sketching while fanning away hoards of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, when I spotted a small structure barely visible in the tall grass. I asked if it was a root cellar; but, no it was a steam bath. I peeked in, sketched it, and this is the result. $0--RM
